How to Create a Successful Orthopaedic Implant
Speaker: Brian Thornes
This course is based upon the experience of Brian Thornes, an orthopaedic surgeon who has created two orthopaedic devices and set up a company to produce, market and sell his implants. The course will cover how to identify an opportunity, the process of designing an implant, the regulatory process and how to take a new device to market.
Mr. Brian Thornes is a medical graduate of Trinity College, Dublin in 1994, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, with 11 years’ postgraduate expertise in orthopaedic surgery. In 2000, Mr. Thornes invented and developed the ‘TightRope’ concept for ankle syndesmosis injuries. He licensed the technology in 2003 to Arthrex Inc, a US multinational. The TightRope has now become the treatment of choice for sport professionals and the general population alike with this injury, and fostered similar techniques for other anatomical sites, such as the shoulder, foot, wrist and knee. Over 150,000 ankle syndesmosis TightRopes have been implanted to date worldwide. Annual revenues of the TightRope family of products is estimated at over $60M p.a.
In 2007, Mr. Thornes invented the X-Bolt (expanding bolt) concept for osteoporotic hip fracture fixation and has managed and grown X-Bolt Orthopaedics through all stages of product development including regulatory approval and clinical use. Mr. Thornes has an MBA from Trinity College Dublin (2006) and is a Board member of the Higher Education Authority of Ireland
